St. Roch, Patron Saint of Dogs

Description: St. Roch was the only child of a wealthy French nobleman, and when his parents died, he gave all the money he inherited to the poor and went on a pilgrimage to Rome to care for people suffering from the plague. Saint Roch eventually became sick with the plague and went into the woods to die so he could not infect others. While he lay dying, a hunting dog belonging to a Count began caring for him by licking his wounds and bringing him bread. St. Roch miraculously recovered and the Count let him keep the dog. Roch, with his dog beside him, returned to France where a civil war was going on and was mistaken as a spy. Instead of revealing his nobility, he and the dog spent five years in prison caring for other prisoners until his death. After his death, people discovered who he was when they saw his red birthmark in the shape of a cross on his chest. St. Roch was declared a Saint 100 years after his death, and was named the Patron Saint of Dogs because of the loving care the dog had given him. This beautiful tag with an amazing red scene of the sky and clouds during a sunrise is a wonderful way to ask St. Roch to watch over your best friend. dogs-in-history.blogspot.com/2017/02/st-roch-patron-saint-of-dogs.html
